MELD FISHIES IS A SIDE TABLE DESIGNED BY LAURIDS GALLÉE IN OCCASION OF THE FIRST EDITION OF PROJECT MATERIA.
Drawing on some of the oldest sculptural processes - carving, shaping, casting - the work departs from classical representations of idealized bodies and proposes a visual language that is stylized, surreal, and emotionally charged.
In ‘Meld Fishies’, ‘Morph Horsies’, and ‘Stack Fishies’, the forms are inflated, primitive, and hybrid. Shapes of horses and fishes blend into one another, their outlines thickened, their identities blurred. The resulting figures appear fused and sometimes comically, sometimes grotesquely, evoking a sense of tragic absurdity. Beneath the playful exterior lies a reflection on how the animal form is both glorified and exploited. Through this fusion of ancient technique and contemporary sensibility the work references the past while speaking to the present.
Laurids Gallée (b. 1988) is an Austrian designer based in Rotterdam, Netherlands, graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2015. HIS works combines his understanding of craftsmanship with a deep passion for material, as well as his personal interest for drawing and illustration. His designs are known for crossing boundaries between the old and the new, and often draw inspiration from folkloric tales and stories. Together with his use of contemporary machinery and processes, such as ink & laser-cutting techniques to dispose of colours on wood, including cedar and beech, the objects coming out of Galléeʼs workshop in Rotterdam create somewhat of a classic-contemporary fusion.
